Advanced Solid-State Metal Extrusion

SolidStir® Extrusion is an advanced solid-state manufacturing process that transforms metal feedstock—including powders, chips, and recycled scrap—into fully consolidated extrudates without melting. Through frictional heat and intense plastic deformation, the process produces dense, fine-grained extrusions with strong mechanical properties and excellent surface finish.

Lower-Temperature Processing

Unlike conventional hot extrusion, SolidStir® Extrusion operates at significantly lower temperatures. This approach can reduce energy consumption while helping preserve material integrity during processing, providing an alternative for applications where processing conditions and material utilization are important considerations.

Efficient Use Of Metal Feedstock

SolidStir® Extrusion supports high material utilization and can process different forms of metal feedstock, including recycled material. The process eliminates the need for lubricants or die heaters, creating opportunities for more materials-conscious manufacturing approaches while converting feedstock into consolidated extruded products.

Processing Advanced And Difficult Materials

The technology is particularly effective for lightweight and hard-to-extrude materials, including aluminum alloys, magnesium, and metal matrix composites. SolidStir® Extrusion also enables dissimilar or gradient material extrusion, expanding possibilities for developing components with different material characteristics within a single extruded structure.

Applications In Modern Manufacturing

SolidStir® Extrusion can support the production of structural components for aerospace, transportation, and circular economy applications. By combining solid-state processing, advanced material capabilities, and continuous extrusion, the technology provides a platform for exploring new approaches to material processing and component production.
